James chapter 3 deals with how faith controls the tongue. James 3:8 says 'But no man can tame the tongue. It is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.' We have all lost our tempers at one time or another, and have said things that have caused considerable damage. Words are stronger than any weapon formed by man, and without the healing power of Jesus, can totally destroy any individual. Words can lift up, or tear down. Words can encourage, or wreak havoc and rip apart the strongest of souls. Proverbs 18:21 says 'Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruit.' What are you speaking? Are you speaking life, or death? James 3:9-10 says 'With it we bless our God and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so.' We must understand that what we speak carries creative force behind it. We were created in the image and likeness (Genesis 1:26), and what we speak is vitally important. Matthew 12:37 says 'For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.' As true believers in Christ, our speech should reflect that Jesus Christ is Lord of our lives and our actions will back up our speech. It's called integrity. Doing what is right when no one sees. But, remember that there is someone always listening; and His name is Jesus Christ. He goes wherever you go; He is watching everything that you do; and He hears each and every word that you say. Kind of puts it into perspective doesn't it? We must all become God inside minded. God will never leave us nor forsake us, so always be aware that wherever you are, He is right there with you. Matthew 12:36 says 'But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment.' When James said that no man can tame the tongue, he was saying no natural man can tame the tongue. But a born again believer that is filled with the Holy Spirit and is led by the Spirit, he can! How can I say this? Because self-control is one of the fruit of the Spirit. But you must be surrendered to and led by the Holy Spirit. Galatians 5:16 says 'I say then; walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.' Galatians 3:25 says 'If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.' Ephesians 4:29 says 'Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.' If you have a problem with lashing out, then ask the Holy Spirit to help you. He will definitely show you what needs adjusting, and will help you make the necessary changes needed to bear the fruit needed to walk in love. He will help you control your tongue. Jesus is our example, and He never spoke anything but truth; and it was all according to the Word!
